This is not so much of a problem for slides as it is for negatives, where I find that even after locking the film base color a scan of a clear frame will produce predominantly red pixels. It would be great if vuescan had a facility to somehow take the average of the white/black/film base pixels. The only problem I see with this procedure is that vuescan locks the film base and black and white points based on the most extreme pixel it can find but the film base color is not perfectly uniform, there's always some noise in the film itself and in the scanner data. The point is that with this workflow I know I get the whites as they are recorded on the slide instead of some auto white balance which mostly works well, but sometimes is disastrous. The scans need work as they are typically too dark, but one could presumably adjust the curve to get closer to something usable straight from the scan. The results show no blown whites at all (in fact, typically the brightest pixels in any real image fall well below the end of the histogram), and the color balance is consistent from frame to frame - so photos taken under overcast consitions are bluish etc. This locks black and white points to pure black and pure white and I scan frames from the whole roll with these settings. In fact, here's my slide workflow - I take a portion of the leader that includes both pure white and pure black, go through the usual dance of preview - lock exposure - preview - lock film base color, adjust crop such that it includes a portion of the pure black, make sure white balance is sensible, lock image color, scan the reference image should I need it later. Make sure you really lock it on something that's clear, and afterwards set white point to zero. I never get blown highlights when fb color is locked.
